Starfleet Security is the branch of the Federation Starfleet responsible for security aboard all Federation starships and at all Federation starbases and outposts. In addition, Starfleet Security is responsible for providing security at all Federation government facilities. Starfleet Security is responsible for maintaining and enforcing Starfleet regulations, procedures and policies on all Starfleet and affiliated facilities, outposts, and vessels, and is responsible for setting security clearances for all Starfleet and government personnel and facilities. Starfleet Security often works in conjunction with Starfleet Intelligence and the Inspector Generals Office.
The Security Chief (or Chief of Security) is the officer in charge of the security division of a starship or starbase.
The on board security positions always depend on the class (i. e. size) of the ship, and the number of crew aboard. On the smallest ships, any officer could find himself delegated Security Officer as secondary duties to his main responsibilities, whilst on medium sized vessels there would be a dedicated security team, with a Lt or Ltjg leading a team of security officers. On the largest ships with crew and dependants numbering in the many hundreds, there would be a Security Chief, Deputy Chief, and Shift Team Leaders, with the number of Security Officers on each shift relevant to the numbers on board. The Security Chief or his Deputy could also double as the on board representative (though not necessarily a member) of Starfleet Intelligence, keeping the Captain advised on any intelligence regarding a mission the ship is about to undertake.
On board USS Alba the Security Department consists of LTjg John Brogan (Security Chief), PO1 David Thomson and CRMN 1C Alan Burnett. The department ran a ship wide security exercise which all crew joined in, and with Captains permission we'll do these quarterly to keep the crew on their toes and allow new crew to bond with the older hands.
Lt Brogan is also heading up the comm badge project which will hopefully come to fruition soon and see the Alba with its own, unique comm badge.
